HEY, KIDS! COMICS!

Our Graphic Novel Book Clubs Pick Their First Books to Read!

We held the first two meetings of the new Comic-Con International Graphic Novel Book Clubs this past week and met with two groups of enthusiastic and psyched readers. Some are totally new to reading comics; others are experienced readers, but all of them are diving into the giant pool of graphic novels and have picked the first three months’ worth of books! Here are their picks for discussion, in case you’d like to read along at home:

Downtown Book Club Reading Selections

Hawkeye TM & © 2014 Marvel & Subs; Underwater Welder © Jeff Lemire; Bandette © Paul Tobin and Colleen Coover

Our downtown Central Library reading group picked the following books to read:

March: Hawkeye, Vol. 1: My Life as a Weapon by Matt Fraction and David Aja (Marvel)

April: The Underwater Welder by Jeff Lemire (Top Shelf)

May: Bandette, Vol. 1: Presto! by Paul Tobin and Colleen Coover (Dark Horse)

Mission Valley Book Club Reading Selections

Y, the Last Man © Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra; Fashion Beast © Alan Moore; Locke & Key © Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez

Our Mission Valley Public Library reading group picked these books to read:

March: Y, The Last Man, Vol. 1: Unmanned by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra (DC/Vertigo)

April: Fashion Beast by Alan Moore, Anthony Johnston and Facundo Percio (Avatar Press)

May: Locke & Key, Vol. 1: Welcome to Lovecraft by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez (IDW)

At our next meeting in March, both groups will pick three more books, one each for June, July, and August. Members of each book club will moderate these discussions at our monthly meetings. We’ll keep you posted on what we pick next!
