2010 Portfolio Review Schedule
Eyes On The Prize!Comic-Con's Portfolio Review offers advice...and maybe your big break!Want to put your skills to use for a top comic, animation, special effects, or design company? Then get that portfolio together and head up into the Sails Pavilion to the Portfolio Review Area, where you'll find industry professionals waiting to critique your work and answer questions. The companies listed below reserved portfolio space early. More will be added as the con rolls on, so be sure to check the schedule at the Autograph Area Information Desk (in the Sails Pavilion) each day. New Application ProceduresTo make the application procedure for Portfolio Review participation more equitable, the onsite process is as follows (if a company does not already have difference procedures in place): Portfolio Area grids and company information sheets will be posted daily, no later than 9:00 am, in the Portfolio Review area. This information will include participating companies for that day and their requirements. Applicants are expected to review this information prior to applying for a Portfolio Review slot.
There is no guarantee that a company will complete its list or waitlist. It is up to each company to decide whether the list will be continued the next day or a new list drawing will be held. Ape EntertainmentApe Entertainment is looking for all-ages-appropriate submission material. Artists who have a flair for dynamic storytelling with a comic book art style that leans toward animation are preferred, but editors are willing to review all professional quality portfolios regardless of style.
Arch Enemy EntertainmentArch Enemy Entertainment is looking for sequential artists as well as colorists this year. Please have copies of your work for reviewers to take, and be ready to talk about yourself and your work. If you are a sequential artist who can color his or her own work that is a big plus.
Cartoon Network StudiosCartoon Network Studios produces several animated favorites, including Generator Rex, Ben 10 Ultimate Alien, and Adventure Time. Cartoon Network's purpose in participating in the review area is to give you feedback in preparing your portfolio for submission in the animation industry. They strongly encourage those with action/comic backgrounds to submit their portfolio for review. While representatives are always happy to hear from fans, they ask that only artists serious in pursuing a career in animation and who have taken the time to compile a portfolio targeted to that goal sign up for time. Please remember that less is more, and pick only your best work to show. It is recommended that you show samples spotlighting the position you want to pursue (i.e., character design, storyboard, etc.). That will help reviewers give you more productive feedback and will make the best use of a limited amount of time.
Committed ComicsCommitted Comics is looking for inkers, colorist, and letters for projects already in production. Committed Comics editor-in-chief Tom Doherty will be on hand to review and look for the next level of talent. If you are not ready to get into the comic book industry right now, this isn't the session for you! Committed Comics is looking for creators who have the drive and determination to go to the next level now, not in a year. The company will also be accepting packets for full projects and scripters (for the first time!). So if you are "committed," step up and show Tom what you've got! Dark Horse ComicsDark Horse Comics will be reviewing the storytelling work of professional-level comics artists. Editors will be looking at consecutive story pages only, with an eye toward storytelling as well as drawing skills. A minimum of five consecutive pages are required. Please bring your most recent work. Artists with cover paintings, inking or coloring samples, pinups, or sketches are invited to submit work by following instructions at www.darkhorse.com/company/submissions. It is suggested that this review be treated like a job interview.
Digital Manga PublishingDigital Manga Publishing, a West Coast manga publisher, is looking for manga style artists and writers, letterers, and creators with finished works available for digital transmission and distribution.
Disney PublishingDisney Publishing wants to see your art! They are looking for talented and committed artists to work on all-ages comics and graphic novels. Previous comics experience is a plus; thy need people who bring talent and dedication to the table. Representatives will be reviewing pencil, ink, and color samples. They will not be looking at or accepting any story or character submissions.
eigoMANGAeigoMANGA is reviewing submissions for original manga or manga-inspired works to be published in the company's line of graphic novels and anthology publications.
Hasbro Design/Sculpt TeamHasbro Design/Sculpt Team will review portfolios of talented artists/sculptors/designers with the following experience: traditional and/or digital 3 3/4" action figures, 6" action figures, 12" action figures; using multiple materials including "industry" waxes; working with multiple tools and hardware; strong understanding for manufacturing and draft considerations; molding and casting; understanding of articulation and implementation; digital expertise including such programs as ZBrush, Freeform, Mudbox, Maya, and/or Solidworks; passion for Hasbro brands and it's licensed properties.
Hasbro Transformers GroupHasbro Transformers Group art director Robert Crowley will review graphic design related to packaging or print (primary) portfolios, and/or Illustration related to packaging (secondary) portfolios.
High Cotton FilmsHigh Cotton Films, a film and entertainment company, will be adding two or three new comic book projects to its slate over the next year. They have an immediate need for digital inkers, greytone artists, and colorists. They are also looking for artists with strong examples of sequential art spanning multiple pages in photorealistic, realistic, superhero, sci-fi, graphic art, or similar styles. Artists who can ink/finish their own work in Photoshop or other digital media are strongly encouraged to apply. Reviewers will also consider illustrators with emotionally evocative, intriguing styles. They are looking for artists who work quickly, who have an understanding of storytelling and pacing, and whose art communicates emotion and humor. Please bring photocopied samples or sample digital files to leave with the reviewer as well as a business card and résumé with your contact information and links to any of your work that can be viewed online.
ID SoftwareID Software is reviewing portfolios of character and environment concept artists and 3D environment and character artists.
IMPACTIMPACT, a publisher of art instruction books, seeks artist authors who can teach beginners step by step with pictures and words in fantasy, graffiti, comics, manga, and popular art styles, including creatures (dragons, fairies, elves, etc.), basic people/bodies/characters, making comic books, and using photo references.
LAIKALAIKA will be reviewing portfolios for storyboard artists, as well as character and environmental designers for stop-motion, 2D, or 3D projects. Candidates who have had exposure to, or direct experience with, any of the following are preferred: animated feature films, animated short films, animated TV series or commercials, or related content. Lucas LicensingLucas Licensing art director Troy Alders will be conducting portfolio reviews, providing critiques, and offering tips for aspiring artists. Bring a selection of your best work and see if you have what it takes to create art for the ever-expanding Lucasfilm galaxy.
Marvel Entertainment, Inc.Marvel Entertainment, Inc., one of the world's most prominent character- based entertainment companies, will be reviewing portfolios of artists, inkers, and colorists for potential future work at the House of Ideas. All creators interested in having their portfolio reviewed should bring copies of their artwork (no originals) to the Marvel Booth, #2329. After reviewing all samples at the end of each day, Marvel will display a list of creators on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday mornings, listing the names and corresponding times of those people they'd like to speak with. No samples will be accepted after 7:00 pm on Saturday. Depending on your area of expertise, you should be prepared to leave behind the following at the Marvel Booth for precreening review. Pencilers: at least 5 pages of sequential art as well as examples of cover illustrations; inkers: samples of your work over at least three different pencilers; colorists: samples that effectively display your different techniques and coloring abilities on various types of pieces Samples will not be returned.NickelodeonNickelodeon is always looking for 2D and CG artists as well as folks interested in production management to contribute to all aspects of the network's shows.
