Introducing the Comic-Con International Graphic Novel Book Club!

Comic-Con International Graphic Novel Book Club

You know we love comics at Comic-Con International (after all, it’s part of our name!) and we’re creating a new fun venture to help share that love! Introducing the Comic-Con International Graphic Novel Book Club, a reading group that will read a graphic novel (or collected trade paperback) once a month and meet to discuss it.

We’re starting off with two groups in San Diego, one at the beautiful new San Diego Central Library located downtown, and one at the San Diego Public Library in Mission Valley. Both libraries are conveniently located near trolley stops. The Mission Valley club will be more of a women’s reading group, with emphasis on alternative comics and women moderators.

As with every book club, membership is extremely limited. We’ll be limiting the amount of participants at each club to a maximum of 30 members. Members must have a MEMBER ID registered with Comic-Con to be considered for participation. (A Comic-Con Member ID is free; you only have to register once. Comic-Con does not sell or share your personal information.) Click here to register for your own Member ID, if you don’t already have one. We will soon announce how you can sign up for the Interest Form. Prospective members should be 18 years of age or older; obviously, living in the greater San Diego area is a consideration for participation.

We are currently compiling a Suggested Reading List of graphic novels and collected editions from across various genres, including Crime/Mystery/Thriller, Fantasy, Horror, Humor, Reality-Based, Science Fiction, and Superheroes. As you can probably guess—with so many great comics out there—it’s impossible to come up with just a small list. We’ll be starting with 60 titles from across the above-named genres, and Comic-Con will pick the first books to discuss at each of the two meeting places. Future books will be picked by the members of each club.

Whether you’re a long-time comics reader or an absolute newbie who has fallen in love with sequential storytelling by visiting Comic-Con or seeing one of the amazing movies and TV shows based on comic book properties, we hope this is something that is up your alley. We sincerely hope the book clubs are popular enough to add additional clubs at public libraries around San Diego County.

Stay tuned for more information, including how to sign up with the Interest Form for those who would like to participate, and our Suggested Reading List (for those who might like to read along at home), in the coming weeks.
